It's 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression. As the Children drowsily wait for their mother to finish shopping, they think about what they want for Christmas, and the toys in Marshall Fields begin to come alive. There must be about 50 dolls and toys in this books, all caught by the photographer in the midst of their play. Very bright colours. Sturdy enough for a modern child, of interest to a toy and doll collector.

CONDITION: Very Good; white areas darkened on covers, rubs on spine, slight curls at corners, half inch tear on back, faded area upper back.

CONDITION: Near Fine in Near Fine jacket; no names, clean, tight, and sharp, 1/8 closed tear on jacket back; unclipped 9.95.

Santa wants to find a new toys, so Jim, the adopted chimney sweep, Hugger the serious Polar Bear, Penny the motherly penguin, and Santa set off in the good ship Chimneypot to find the island of the Live Toys. Grand adventures as they meet Neptune, find a cannibal island (stereotypical pictures), and sail beneath the sunset to Rocking Island and finally to Doll Island. The dolls long to become Christmas presents, and, though the life goes out of them when they reach the real world, Santa is sure that "they will come alive again if they are loved enough." A wonderful Christmas tale, imaginative and direct, one of a few non-Oz books by this writer and the only Neill/Plumly non-Oz effort.

Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co. (1926) early or first printing, grey boards with full pasted-on yellow plate, blue titles, Santa at the helm with Penny and Hugger looking on, plain endpapers, many illustrations in tones of red, brown, and black; 7.25x9.5"; 124 pp.
CONDITION: Good Minus; Sept. 1926 gift inscription on half title; although the cover plate picture is bright, the yellow background and grey cloth are grubby and the corners of the plate are chipped off, extrems slightly bumped and worn through, wrinkled spine; paper cracked at front hinge so shaken but holding, back ok, wrinkled spine, slight 1/16" inch warp; two 3/4" margin tears. pages with intermittent handling soil in margins and light reading wrinkles and a few tiny margin tears on first four chapters, the rest generally unwrinkled and clean.

CONDITION: Very Good with no jacket; neat birthday inscription in addition to Tudor signature, corners quite rubbed, some rubs through pink to white on edges.

The fourth Mellops book. Casimir, Isidor, Felix, and Ferdinand, the Mellop pig children, have a sad moment when they realize they have all brought the family surprise Christmas trees, but they rally and soon fill an entire apartment house with joy.

New York: Harper & Brothers, (1960), 1st, does not mention 1961 book. aqua paper boards with Mellop-Santa portrait, 9.3x8" oblong, jacket has same design, ca. 32 pp.
CONDITION: Very Good in Good jacket; child's name and number on fep, lightly foxed and light foxing to one spread, a little splayed, edges and extrems rubbed but not bumped, inside all clean, unwrinkled; darkening jacket also lightly foxed, appearing dull, 1/4" chips at spine ends, rubs and a few small holes on creases, two 1.5" tears; unclipped 2.50.
