The Green Fairy Book

In his preface To the Friendly Reader, Lang writes: "This is the third and probably the last of the Fairy Books of many colours." but of course it was not! Stories borrowed from many cultures. The Brown Fairy Book.

Stories from Africa, Australia, and N. America among others. Most presented by Mrs. Lang, "who does not give them exactly as they are told by all sorts of outlandish natives, but makes them up in the hope white people will like them, skipping the pieces which they will not like." A Midsummer Night's Dream intro story, adapted, illus by Lucy Fitch Perkins

A Midsummer Night's Dream for young people.

Perkins is best know for her twins series, but she also illustrated a about eight lovely larger books, of which this is one of the most elaborate. Her introductory story concerns Shakespeare and the play told from the point of view of his younger brother fresh to London. Perkin's illustrations and the play itself depend on Titania and Puck and the Players with their marvellous rendition of Pyramis and Thisbe. Just right for sixth grade actors! A Southern Cross Fairy Tale.by Clark, Kate McCosh. KMcC, Atkinson, ill. [1891].

A Southern Cross Fairy Tale.

It is Christmas and summertime in New Zealand, and Santa, as a young man, comes to Cis and Hal with the gift of a wand of love, which allows them to understand and speak to the animals. The children set off on an evening of adventure and dance. Though the people in this book are pretty predictable, the strange vegetation (to those of us thousands of miles away) and the many curious animals of the night, all with distinct characters, make this a fascinating fairy tale. The author has added 4 pages of notes on the different creatures at the end of the book. Note: This Book Has Been SOLD.

The Magic Map Book by May Byron, /Alan Wright, ill, Frowde, Hodder [ca 1908] map

The Magic Map Book.

The adventures of two children, which can be followed on the map, with larger scale pictorial maps facing the text pages (these could be called labeled drawings). Rhymed verses written in paragraph form. May Byron wrote for Chloe Preston as well but her humor is not drawn out by these more conventional pictures. Wonderful for any map lover or any child who really wants to pin down the location of fairyland! A scarce book anyway, but to find it with a beautiful map is unusual. Fairy Flowers by Isidora Newman, /Willy Pogany, ill., NY Oxford 1926, 1st Am

Fairy Flowers.

Really wonderful fairy stories and pictures, strange, too. They made a strong impression on me as a child. Newman was a Jewish storyteller and painter originally from New Orleans interested in children's welfare. Pogany encouraged her natural talent.

A book I am discarding as I upgrade my own collection. Please note that the main jpg here is of an interior plate, not the binding. Note also that while people frequently refer to these plates as being "tipped in" (glued at the top), all the ones I have seen have been mounted, or pasted - on Please note: THIS BOOK HAS BEEN SOLD
