Once Upon a Time: Illustrations from Fairytales, Fables, Primers, Pop-Ups, and Other Children's Books

Once Upon a Time: Illustrations from Fairytales, Fables, Primers, Pop-ups, and other Children's Books by Amy Weinstein (preface by Ellen Liman); New York: Princeton Architectural Press (2005) Amazon will probably send you a later printing; trade paperback with folded flap covers and good quality paper, 9x12"; 179 pp .

Despite its length, the title doesn't indicate the value of this book to the collector. Here are over 300 images of choice pieces from the Liman Collection of Nineteenth-Century McLoughlin Brothers Illustrated Children's Books. The collection was donated to the Brooklyn Historical Society by Mrs. Ellen Liman, perhaps after this book was in press. The short preface by Ellen Liman describes the excitement, joy, and imagination that went into this project over the years.  The photographs are large and clearly reproduced, if a little "aged"; the examples are absolutely beautiful. Accompanying captions are more or less taken from examining the books. (Greedily, one wishes the notes were from the Liman's themselves, but the visual beauty of this book is reason enough to purchase it!)

On page 13, a useful list of the different McLoughlin names and street addresses with accompanying dates, which may come from their 1928 book mentioned in the short Bibliography.

Note on ordering from Amazon: When ordering a large heavy book it is wise to order a smaller book at the same time so the shipment will be in a box.
