Parasols is for Ladies.

Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, (1941); boards with wrap around painting of the three little Black girls looking up at their parasols; endpapers with map of community; 20 full page illustrations, 6 in colour incl. frontis facing page 1 and many illustrations in text; 6.75x10.5"; 96 pp. Juvenile hardback.

Endless stereotypical dialect, and illustrations of cute but cartoonish Blacks vs. realistic Whites prove tiresome but the steady determination of Genesis, Magnolia, and Israella Jones and their family's strong support adds realism. Popular in its time: "A darky story of the deep south, and of three little girls who wanted parasols even at the cost of some of their tomboyishness, but that $1.50 was hard come by. This is the story of how the whole family pitched in to help. Kirkus, 1941"

CONDITION: Very Good without jacket; no names or other marks, extremities bumped and somewhat worn with bottom corner tips worn through; opens freely but not loose, pages and endpapers very flat and clean. Item #19293

Price: $355.00
