Tit-Bit Stories/For Little Folks.

New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, 42, Bleeker St.; London: S. W. Partridge & Co., 9, Paternoster Row; Tit-Bit Story Series "A", no date ca 1881 based on style and owner inscription; tiny books in wraps with publisher's sewn binding covered by coloured illustrations bordered in leaves and red berries, coloured frontis plate glued in, both intricate little paintings with dull gold sky and 24 interior pages with either drawing or silhouette in sepia facing brief text; the frontispieces were used interchangeably with the covers on different books in this series; 3 x 3.5" Toploader small softcover story.

A sweet little series with coloured illustrations in imitation of Kate Greenaway and nice line drawings all by the same hand in the three little books I have seen. The stories alternate between child centered ones (silhouettes, sometimes comic) Racing to School, Playing Cooks, Hide-and-Seek and adult issues (drawings) a poor woman gathering sticks, a horse refusing a beer, making an interesting little book for a child. Scarce. I suspect the "A" indicates a first in the series, rather than a printing.
