Juvenile hardback.

The first American edition and translation of this lovely Swiss classic, first published in two parts in German by F. A. Perthes in 1880 and 1881. The endpaper contains an inscription: Agnes A. Newton, Christmas, 1884. The touching inscription below reads: "To Miss Myra Barker in loving remembrance of Agnes A. Newton, from Mrs. F. H. Newton, 1897, also a tiny word in quotation marks which I cannot read.

The translator, Louise Winsor Brooks, was a Boston philanthropist who donated all proceeds from sales of the book to charity, which seems fitting for this book.

CONDITION: Very Good; light rubbing to corners and edges; spine foot rubbed through to 1/8"; some paler spots to back, some light reading wrinkles, tight but with front hinge paper reglued; altogether a book read and reread but well cared for. Item #19699
