The Rat Catcher or the Magic Fife; a story of olden time.

New York: Charles Scribner, 145 Nassau Street, 1854 Christmas printing, true US 1st, correct address, (1855 on title page, 1854 co.]; translated from the German by Mrs. H. C. Conant from Die Wunderpfeife, oder: Die Kinder von Hameln. Ein Märchen, [1835]; green blindstamped silk boards and elaborate gilt spine; plain endpapers with a sticker from Taylor and Maury contemporary booksellers and publishers of "Washington City"; tissue guarded frontis of the piper and children; 4.5x6.25; 166 pp. Small hardback.

A 19th c Pied Piper of Hamelin, quite long and full of interesting detail, for instance, a description of the travelling kennel for hundreds of rats, mice, and moles. Nieritz has reimagined and softened this medieval legend/history for children, as who would not, with the boy Tobias and the magician's dog  Pasch finally rescuing the dead and tortured children with the magic flute and returning them to their parents at the end of the year.  This was one of Nieritz' early  books.  A good read, well written and translated.

CONDITION: Good Plus; Christmas 1854 gift inscription; binding nice although bottom board has 1" narrow spot; spine gilt and cloth quite faded with 1/16" splits to ends; 1/8" lean and one signature pushed forward with slight separation; prelims foxed, including tissue and title page, pages unwrinkled and clean with very occasional foxing.
