The Crimson Fairy Book.

New York, London, and Bombay: Longmans Green and Co., 91 and 93 Fifth Avenue, 1903, 1st; crimson cloth boards with tiny flowers, fairies, and a Knight and the Dragon; a standing knight on the spine; pink front endpapers with crimson drawing of fairy heralds in the sky, rear endpapers blue blue green drawing of fairy riding on a bat with drowsing fairy asleep on the moon, gilt all around; 8 tissue guarded coloured plates including frontis, and 35 black and white full plates, all as issued, 10 other drawings in text; 8vo.; 371 pp. Juvenile hardback.

In an amusing preface, the editor points out yet again that he is not the creator of these stories, as most of his readers seem to think. "Like nature, popular tales are too vast to be the creation of a single modern mind." His wife, Mrs. Lang, actually wrote the adaptations for most of them so his role has been in ferreting out the interesting and varied world wide tales of this collection, which is midway in the Fairy Books.

CONDITION: Good; Christmas inscription written very lightly on back of frontis; red cloth and gilt very bright on board and edges , spine faded with its gilt extremely dull, bottom edge rubbed and extrems worn through; some margin soil, but generally clean and flat though darkening; several separations showing thread but fairly solid with hinges intact and no lean, spot on one plate margin, ow plates in nice condition, several darkened tissue guards have chips or wear and one tissue guard is missing.
