A Little Clown.

New York: The Orion Press, 116 East 19th St. NY, 1962, 1st nap; reinforced orange boards with white spine and letters, in jacket with the little clown playing a round backed mandolin while his dog dances painted in bright primary colours on free ink drawing; 7x8.5; np. Picture Book hardback.

The tired little clown falls asleep on his horse and dreams, and what fanciful dreams! "Matias (1926-2006) could almost be Matisse as he splatter-paints his pages with gorgeous blobs of red, yellow, orange, blue and green." Matias produced several books of these happy books about little animals in his 20's and then went on to become a painter and famous costume designer (for among other plays, Godot).
