Våra Husdjur

Stockholm: Axel Eliassons Konstförlag, no date (c. 1912) on the back "Import" (not "Jimport"); heavy card boards over stapled spine covered by red paper, making a thin 3/8" "spine", on the front a huge St. Bernard, looking rather worried, and tiny puppies, on the back a horse and his hound dogs friends in a stable, two b/w and tan pictures on reverse of the boards; inside on soft paper are repeats of these two pictures as well as ten others, all in full colour, oblong 13x9.25; np. Swedish language hardback,

Large, soulful animals, skillfully observed and depicted full page in their setting, in pen line and ink with glowing watercolour wash. Axel Eliasson and other Swedish printers imported many of their books from Germany during this time period. It seems likely that the illustrations are from an uncredited German artist with Aspelin providing the text, as they are unlike her familiar van Olfers type pictures.. We see calves and chickens in the farmyard trying out the taste of a turnip, a horse and his foxhound friends in a box stall, mules with paniers on the beach, a cow and her calf in a meadow, a mother sheep and her lambs in a hill pasture, a fox terrier and her active puppies, St. Bernard puppies crawling over their big sweet mom, a cat and her kittens on a cushion, a draft horse and her colt in a field, a hen and her chicks in a nest, a mother and father duck teaching their babies to swim, another cow family, and two scruffy ponies.
