Not all illustrations are Christmas themed, but this makes a cheerful holiday book nonetheless. Active American 19th c children set in a detailed daily environment, very pretty and interesting, more like de Monvel than Greenaway though not as skilled. Coloured chromos on every page, most half or full pictures, with various uncredited poems by Amy Ella Blanchard, a prolific author who collaborated with Waugh, her lifelong companion, on several other books.
CONDITION: Good Minus; pencil name on endpaper, margins of glazed boards and cloth spine lightly foxed; text very shaken with several cracks including endpapers; some soil and reading wrinkles in margins of beginning pages, but generally bright and clean. Item #21910
