Peter Schlemihl's wundersame Geschichte

Wien, Leipzig, München; Rikola Verlag, (1922) probable 1st, , printed by R. Kiesel in Salzburg; 6 full colour plates and chapter (book) head and tail by Hagel (not credited or listed); tan boards with shadowless Peter and mocking children, brown cloth spine, ; tan endpapers with red stylized poodle pattern; 19.5 x 26 cm; 64 pp.; page of publisher's children's offerings 1922 and before. Hagel's attenuated expressive figures work beautifully to illustrate the story of the foolish young man who sold his shadow to a magician, only to find he could not live a normal life. Hagel, a well known Austrian illustrator, was painting in Germany at this time. Interesting that his name appears only as a signature on the cover painting.
