The story of a faithful sister and her brother, who is turned into a deer by their wicked stepmother. The artist, a pupil of the Berlin Academy, was primarily know as a historical, animal, and religious painter and the understanding between the sister and the deer is very sweet. One of a beautiful series begun before World War One with the aim of bringing inexpensive work from from Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, fine artists to children. The series list grew and earlier volumes were republished with slightly different cover styles. (Dates from Klotz 2016).
