Boston: Joseph Knight Company, 1891 thus,/ 1853, Preface by the Rev. Brooke Herford , D. D.; illustrated and printed by the Art Publishing Company, tan cloth with large sprays of pink flower heads, decorated red cloth spine binding, with gilt titles. Juvenile hardcover.
Perceptive vignettes set a small English town with very few men around, written with Mrs. Gaskell's gentle satirical humour. The ladies offer "kindness (somewhat dictatorial) to the poor, and real tender good offices to each other". A table lists the many small Reginald Birch like illustrations in headings, tailpieces, and in text. These seem to be by one hand and original to Art Publishing Company but are not credited. A delight in a pretty binding and a nice Christmas present for someone.
CONDITION: Near Fine, 1894 gift inscription from Cousin Robert to Cousin Elizabeth, very straight and clean, very light bumps to extrems, well bound but opens freely. Item #22672
