Mac and Tosh. 6 little readers

Huddersfield, UK: Schofield & Sims, 1940's?, stringbound, small tan card covered with coloured spine, story illustration on front, two dogs on back; 4 x 5.5", 32 pp. Small education readers.

A little set of early readers, not complete, but these are elusive. Four of these are the earliest in the series. They star Mac, a Scotty, and Tosh, an unknown breed and their human friends Jim and Jenny. The illustrations for this edition are wonderfully expressive, each story with black and one flat colour, with a lithographic look; the text tells interesting stories in just a few words. I found Townsend mentioned in an exhibition catalogue, "British Printmakers of the 1920s and 1930s". Ellen Ashley did other scarce readers for the publisher. Here are: Mac and Tosh ... Go for a Picnic, a Ride, a Walk, a Race; Try to write, Try to Read.

CONDITION: Near Fine; no names or marks, a couple of tiny ink spots, spine of Picnic is quite rubbed, some others have a touch of rubs, tiny tip bumps, very tight, string snug, probably unopened and unread. Item #22687

Price: $150.00
