Mary Barnes was the Director of Sydney University's Mathematics Learning Center. Her work with students who were having difficulties led her to research on the learning of calculus. Her program emphasizes mathematical modeling and practical applications with an emphasis on meaning rather than symbol manipulation. It includes interesting investigative and exploratory group work, well trialled by teachers. Because of this approach, it is of interest to the teacher of advanced young students as well. Units 1-10 Functions and Modelling, Families of Functions, Rates of Change, Finding Gradient Functions, Putting Derivatives to Work, More about Functions and Differentiation, Growth and Decay, Reversing the Process, Total Change, Limits and Infinity. with numerous illustrations, charts, and graphs. Also includes the two Teachers' Handbooks, written with much input from teachers (!), Unit #1-5 and Unit #6-10. A rare chance to purchase this excellent curriculum in its entirety (with $3.75 US Media Mail shipping.).
