Galarza's two Zoo books use the same 46 animal photos, but the accompanying poems are not "translations of each other... fun can be fun in Spanish or English, or any other language, each in its own way.""En el espejo del agua/el cisne se admira el cuello/pensando: "Es el ás bello/ de Yucatán a Chihuahua." and "Oh my, Oh me,/ how beautifully/we glide across the pond./Who would not want to be/a swan?" Galarza, the author of Barrio Boy, is well known for his research, writing, and activism on immigrant farm labor issues... He also wrote a series of 12 short books including Zoo-Risa, with his photos on every page. This series, Collección Mini-Libros, addressed the need of young Mexican American children for Spanish language reading and ties to home culture: poety, books on California and Mexico, and books on various agricultural industries, including labor issues.
