Nelson Early Readers 1866: Young Child's Picture Book in Words of One Syllable; Book of Beasts for Young Readers

London, Edinburgh and New York: T. Nelson and Sons, 1866, probable 1sts (Beasts is identical but has no date), dark blue pressed boards, gilt panel on spine, ivory endpapers, captioned frontis; 64 pages (two little books included) 3.25x5"; 64pp ea. Small.

Several of these little reading books seem to have been published in 1866 by Nelson, judging by later editions and others in our possession, but early ones like this have virtually disappeared. They were ungraded and intended for home use, with just a few hints as to age level. The chapter head of each story has a finely engraved illustration followed by two pages of text. Actually a good idea, the Dolch books did something of the same a few years ago but without the charm. Offered here are two books from one child's collection, one fiction, the other factual.

The Young Child's Picture Book has very short stories, well written, secular, most with amusing twists at the end or sensible reflections on bad behavior. "Young folks like to read tale books, and old folks like to hear the young folks read them. And how nice it is to read tales with no long words in them!"

The Book of Beasts has two page articles on 29 wild animals, with interesting information, not excessively chatty or fantastic, "Some of the best artificial teeth supplied by dentists are made from the tusk of the Hippopotamus."

CONDITION: Very Good "Hamilton Hazlehurst from his Ma Dec. 25 1867", both tight, with corners sharp or with tiny rubs, pages very clean and unwrinkled, no foxing, lightly toned, Picture Book spine quite faded and slanted, Beast with pale spot on top board. Item #22713
