Nursery Picture Book.

Newark NJ and New York: Charles E. Graham & Co. Ever Wear Kanvas Books #0435 Everwear Series, Logo of Mother Goose painting C. E. G. on an easel on the back; red and white checkered strip on edges, blue "Kanvas" cover with large full colour illustration on front, smaller Brundage girl and puppy on the back; inside 4 coloured illustrations, others dark sepia; 11.8 x 10.4"; 10 interior pages. Toploader Large.

On the cover a wonderful Victorian Mr. Punch in jester's motley with bells, holding his slapstick. He is reading a book, observed by a mild looking crocodile. Inside are large captioned illustrations of her charming young children, many familiar. The Nursery Picture Book is hard to date as Charles E. Graham published and Frances Brundage worked over a long period of time. Brundage's illustrations show mostly turn of the century children with pinafores and cape collars, the dresses in the last picture looking a bit more modern, so the book probably dates from the 1910s, maybe earlier. Given Mr. Punch's elaborate costume and the non-threatening crocodile, usually his chief enemy, it is possible that the cover is Brundage's, (it's an odd subject for her). However it is unlikely that either the illustrations or the cover illustration, seen with more detail by Hurst, are original to the book. "Kanvas series" books are uncommon and the coated paper, which could be fine linen, takes detail and colour beautifully.

CONDITION: Very Good; faint old small pencil pencil prices and erasures in the top front corner, lightly bumped corners, foxing on checkered margins of top cover; otherwise clean inside and out with nice spine, no rubs, splits, or creases and bright colour. Item #22908
