Philadelphia: Claxton, Remsen, & Haffelfinger, 1873/co. 1872 presumed 1st printing of this first edition (January 28th 1873 inscription); brown cloth with black stamped decorations, gilt titles and fine gilt picture of acrobat and circus horse, elaborate gilt and black spine, blindstamped back; brown endpapers, "with Twelve Superb Chromo-Lithographic Illustrations" from designs by Hermann Faber, present as issued, and each page bordered with same line design; 6x8", 15x20cm; 136 pp. Note: the LC indicates 1 cm larger all around, assuming it was measured accurately. Juvenile hardback.

Many, many story rhymes, reminiscent of nursery rhymes, but gentler, with topics of interest to children, and quite well done. The illustrations are by a German American artist primarily known for medical illustration and his "Death of Lincoln" There must be an interesting story behind this book.

CONDITION: Good Minus; charming 1873 birthday inscription on interior flyleaf, spine bright and front cover good, extremities bumped and worn, loosening and separating on interior pages so that signatures are uneven, evidence of moisture damage from pp. 60 to 80, affecting plates, especially. margins; wrinkles and page soil on early and late pages, still most pages flat and clean.
