Der Struwwelpeter.

Philadelphia: The Kohler Publishing Co. no date; printed in German; ivory paper boards with red and black titles and picture, on top with clear faced Peter standing on a board, not plinth, with red striped stockings, on the bottom board, a German street scene, looking rather 19th c, brown cloth spine; book begins with angels dropping toys from heaven on rich and poor children, then the Struwwelpeter page (blue stockings) and then goes on to the stories which are printed on both sides. All type is in Fractur, except for the publisher's name. German language hardback. medium.

An unusual item; perhaps bound in the USA with sheets from Germany. Kohler was a small publishing firm active in Philadelphia in the second half of the 19th century.

CONDITION: Good Plus; no names or other marks, appears tight but lower staple has pulled loose, light soil to boards, small hole in spine cloth, bottom spine corner quite worn off for 1/4" (looks worse than it sounds) and worn on other bottom corner with a narrow 1" strip of water damage not extending to endpaper; quite nice and clean inside with very occasional foxing. Item #19755
