Volksrijmpjes De Reis Door Perzie

Brussel: De Wilde Roos, [1930-31]; white paper boards with a dog running away with a piece of the old woman's skirt and the publisher's name; three titles listed, no general interior title page; tan linen spine; three stories bound, each with title pages but no dates; 7.5x8.75"; np. Flemish (Dutch) language hardback.

A bundled set of three Russian tales from the late 20's, which were published in this Flemish edition in 1930 or 1931, only thus. ( Serge-Aljosja Stommels, Albert Lemmens 2014). These booklets are bound together in the book reverse order from the title on the board. First Ben Ik... a collection of comic poems ascribed to Marschak (but Humpty Dumpty and the old woman and her dog appear) and illustrated by Konashevich; then, traditional rhymes illustrated by Konashevich in a more folkloric style; last, the trip to Persia written by Marschak and illustrated by Lebedew in a modernist style. This last story really deals with loading household goods and a dog on a baggage train, not the trip itself, the punch line being that the dog will grow during the long trip.(Destination changed from Russia to Persia). The paper is heavy and the colors are vibrant... a lovely, early sample of avant garde Russian children's book illustration, which had a profound effect first on French and then on other western children's book illustration.
