Clark; long preface by the translators; brown cloth spine with gilt titles and silver metallic paper boards with geometric brown and red design; roughcut edges, frontis and one full page illustration, 6 half page; 4 x 6.1. Small hardback early.

A very charming little book illustrated in black, red, and rusty brown, with scenes of peasants and bears. 21 short stories and poems about bears, including folk-tales and several works by Tolstoy, Pushkin, Krylov and Remizon, as well as Garshin, Nekrasov, and Chemnitzer. And as an epilogue, the biblical story of the prophet Elijah and the mocking children! On the rear endpaper a tiny embossed label from the respected Holliday Bookshop in New York.

CONDITION: Good Plus; no names, straight, tight, neat spine with clear lettering, corners bumped and worn to card, some edge rubbing,delicate paper lightly rubbed on top board, very rubbed on bottom, clean flat darkening pages are cut, one tiny closed gutter tear. Item #22523
