Winston Company, 1916, 1st; dark green cloth boards with full plate with coloured photo of Mary Frances in her garden and titles; cream endpapers with large sprays of green flowers, frontis plate, empty playhouse, and 4 seasonal flower plates (six plates in all), multiple alternating L shaped borders with line drawings and orange touches on every page, many lists and charts, 378 pp and 2 pp ads. A comprehensive garden book for an older child (or adult) with Mary Frances whimsy. As the story goes along the children learn about many aspects of gardening, even grafting. 65 chapters! As with all the later MF books, there is a hands-on element. Here the frontis shows the play house "in flower", the first fold out plate is MF's blank play house, and the succeeding 4 fold out plates show seasonal frameworks of flowers in the beds which can be cut out and attached to the cottage plate with tabs, each accompanied by a useful chart of hardy flowers.
CONDITION: Very Good; Neat gift inscription on fep margin, spine gilt a bit dull, tiny rubs on corners, all plates perfect, all fresh, straight, clean, and tight and almost unread. Appears Near Fine in photos... But I neglected to double check on receipt! To our astonishment, someone has painted every edge of this beautiful copy using light green poster paint! Careless work, too. Thus price. We have sanded the edges so it now looks like a stain from the front but the reality is worse than the jpgs. Look at the picture of the back. Item #22658
