The Peek-a-Boos Among the Bunnies
Springfield, MA: McLoughlin Brothers, (1929), pink parchment paper mottled boards with brown titles and large pasted on plate of Matilda Peek-a-Boo and the father rabbit showing his Baby a watch;, little boy training his dog on endpapers, frontis and five coloured plates (one same as cover), with numerous drawings by both artists in text; 6.5x8. Picture Book hardback.
When they are invited to the Rabbit Ball, Maximillian and Matilda stay at The Warren, and the two illustration styles, Preston vs.Potter-like, seem to create parallel worlds. Hoyle's text keeps the tongue in cheek charm of Preston's books. "Are you very hungry? Were you too hot?.....Matilda tried to answer very politely, but Mrs. Rabbit never waited for answers, which saves a lot of trouble really." A much later American publication of this preWWI book, designed more simply, printed and bound by McLoughlin.
