Malleville, a Franconia Story

Malleville, a Franconia Story

New York: Harper and Brothers (1850) textured ruled red cloth with stamped borders and gilt spine, cream endpapers, frontis and occasional illustrations in text; 8vo; 219 pp. Juvenile hardback.

Gentle stories of the winter Malleville, a six year old invalid, spent with her aunt and uncle, her cousin, her brother, and a young French Canadian, called Beachnut by the children. Not didactic, since " ... the growing up in the right atmosphere rather than the receiving of the right instruction, is the condition which it is most important to secure, in plans for forming the characters of children." Interesting details of children's play and observations on the changes in the snowy climate. The first of the Franconia series, with a few etchings to illustrate the text.

CONDITION: Good, no names, fairly tight but slightly slanted, spine gilt dull, extremities very rubbed, boards darkening, intermittent foxing and page soil. Item #22750
