Menino.
New York: Grosset and Dunlap (1940) probable 1st and only G&D original, two 1939 titles on rear flap; yellow paper boards with Menino, his monkey, and the family donkey, endpapers with full illustration of the boy and his father with the ox cart, colorful pictures on every other spread alternate with b/w tones; in jacket identical to boards. Picture book hardback.
Menino works very hard for his first carnival suit and just when it is in reach, his father's ox cart accident means the money must be used elsewhere. The author seems familiar with Brazil and treats the inevitable bail-out by a North American tourist with unusual dignity for a country book of this period. Joyous spread of Carnival at the end.
