Amy Garnet, the Alms-House Girl. (Garnett on binding and frontis.)
Boston: Andrew F. Graves, The Belmont Series (1870); russett cloth boards with elaborate black and gilt design on both boards and spine, 3 tissue guarded plates as issued (Simmons University copy) 8vo; 279pp plus 5 pg publisher's catalogue. Juvenile hardback.
Quite a good book, with a kind and beautiful but destitute heroine who moves from almshouse to servitude to unwilling stardom in a miserable circus. The characters mingle goodness and weakness but, in the end, the families reunite, the bad characters reform, the rough are cherished, and all is well. With detailed and often lovely descriptions of the Maine coast and the woods and countryside.
CONDITION: Very Good Plus; light pencil name on ep, clean boards and spine with bright gilt, clean pages, nice plates and guards; slanted, spine margins pushed with tiny tears on spine foot. Item #22843
