Dog of St. Bernard.

New York: McLoughlin Bros & Co Publishers, Natural History Series, Printed in Oil Colors, [1871] yellow paper boards with green and red titles and a center bw etching of a huge St. Bernard arriving back at the monastery with the lost child (repeated in oil colours inside); 3 single sided plates, "printed in oil colors"; back has ads for Half hours with the Bible, Mrs. Hale's Library 25¢ each, and Pleasure books; "endpapers" blank; 6 x 7.5" Toploader medium softcover.

Despite the condition, a wonderful book about these giant dogs, the first part being a description of their work, with anecdotes, followed by a three page poem about a lost child rescued by a pair of these great creatures. There are three memorable plates of the dogs working in the snow under a starry sky. The oil color process yields brilliant pictures, carefully done with clear detail. Short haired shaggy thick coated brown dogs with just a touch of white and with fairly boxy heads, dewlaps, big paws, and bushy tails held down, looking about 30" tall'; with barrels, so perhaps also the coat pattern of the artist's imagination . Not common.

CONDITION Fair to Good Minus, no names, plates very deep and bright, pages are fairly clean but very rumpled, foxed yellow cover margins with chip off bottom corner and bumped top, old numbers visible, cover pages neatly overcast to sewn spine ; "endpapers" water stained and soiled. Item #22851
