Gypsy's Rainy-Day Book.

New York: Dodd, Mead, Company, 731 Broadway, (1877), probably 1st, Franklin Press, Reed, Avery and Company, 117 Franklin Street, Boston; black cloth spine and coloured and gilt illustrated boards with a floral border and a happy child reading her book while a little dog waits with his ball, all rather swiftly hand coloured, on the back "Illustrated Books for Children"; small 4to; 96 pp. Juvenile hardback.

A charming book "filled with beautiful pictures with descriptive text." Actually little stories of a few lines , not didactic, for a small child of 1877, most spanning one to three pages. About three quarters of each page is filled with a black and white illustration, the illustrations by different artists. Possibly the stories were written for available publisher's illustrations, since according to Publisher's Weekly, it sold for only 50¢. Probably not part of the Phelps' Gypsy series which is listed on the back. Scarce, two copies in libraries.

CONDITION: Good; neat 1878 gift inscription, tight and straight, a little rubbing on spine ends, boards darkening, much wear to corners and edges, creases apparent on front., intermittent soil to pages; one inch margin tear and bent top corners, but not too bad. Item #22853

Price: $115.00
